Tip of the Month Reminder to Check Your Sprinkler System Despite beautiful gardens with a vasr array of colors, summer months can bring heat, drought and yes, brown spots to our lawns. A green lawn develops brown spots for many reasons, but improper watering conditions would be at the top of the list. Extremely hot and dry temperatures are just as stressful on turf and plants as they are on humans, and sometimes more water means healthier plants in the summer time. Now is the time to ensure you adjust up your watering schedule or sprinkler program so your plants and grasses get the amount of water needed to survive the high temperatures of summer. We also advise you check your sprinkler heads to make sure they are appropriately spaced to reach all parts of the lawn, spraying in the correct pattern to avoid sidewalks and walls, and pressurized to effectively disperse water. Flower of the Month Lantana As a perennial flowering plant offering aromatic flower clusters, or umbels, in combinations of red, orange, yellow or blue with white florets, Lantanas are native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa. The most widely used varieties are Lantana camara, or the common lantana, and Lantana montevidensis, or the trailing lantana - both with large, rough leaves and colorful blossoms that attract butterflies all summer long. Growing best in full sun, blooming in the heat of summer and surviving in almost any type of soil makes this a resilient plant in the south. Once established, lantanas are low maintenance and highly drought tolerant, though bloom and growth rate can be reduced if left dry for too long. Thoroughly water on a weekly basis and have flowers pruned periodically to encourage repeat blooming.
